Tom Vaughan studied at the University of Houston with Broadway legend Jose Quintero and three-time Pulitzer Prize winner Edward Albee. He began his professional career as the Artistic Director of the short lived but critically acclaimed West-Mon Repertory Theatre in Houston. It was his work there as a writer and director that got him recognized by Hollywood.
He was soon writing screenplays for, among others, Phoenix Pictures, Spelling Films, Rysher Entertainment, TNT, MTV Films, Castle Rock Entertainmen, Sony Pictures and Warner Brothers. Most recently he wrote THE ORIGINAL, a suspense thriller for Disney/Touchstone.
His productions include BLACKOUT with Jane Seymour for CBS, and CRITICAL ASSEMBLY with Katherine Heigl (Grey's Anatomy, Knocked up) for NBC. He served as writer as well as Co-Producer on ATOMIC TWISTER with Sharon Lawrence and DEAD IN A HEARTBEAT with Penelope Anne Miller and Judge Reinhold, both for TBS. His feature film debut was UNSTOPPABLE, starring Wesley Snipes. His script, BRONWYN & CLYDE, which he co-wrote with Kris Dobkin, was recently set-up at Essential Entertainment. UV Pictures, his partnership with Chris Uettwiller, is producting with Dolly Hall. It is targeted for $30 million production next year with Barry Sonnenfeld (Get Shorty, Men In Black) directing. Tom is fighting hard to have it filmed in Houston.
Since returning to Houston he has dedicated himself to small organizations aimed at expanding Houston’s theatre and film community.
He has been teaching screenwriting for five years and finds it as gratifying as actually practicing it.

The Improving The Read class addresses the second significant stumbling block to new screenwriters: making their scripts convey the emotional experience of actually seeing the film. The days of writing a script to be filmed are long gone. Scripts are now meant to be read. They will be read by a dozen people up the chain before the small miracle of being filmed is ever achieved. This class focuses on how to create the best experience for the reader.
While this is a far more technical and hands-on class, it is absolutely worth the work. Your spec script is essentially a selling tool, and this class teaches you how to maximize the opportunity someone gives you when they agree to read it.
This class will show you how to create the movie in the reader's head by...
Winning the confidence of the reader so they will keep reading.
Duplicating the same rhythm and tempo of your movie on the page.
Writing for emotional effect to evoke a response from the reader.
Helping the reader better connect with your characters.
Making sure the reader doesn't skip the in-writing and go to the dialogue.
Writing the slimmest, trimmest and most effective version of your story.
Quietly direct the film and control the story without anyone knowing what you're doing.
And much more...
You should not let another person read your script until you believe you understand the principles of how to make your script "a good read". This class will show you the basics and beyond.
You will see the dividends immediately. Seriously. Immediately. |
